Bartleby's Great Books Online Bartleby’s is an online library. Here you can find works of reference, verse, fiction and non-fiction in their complete form. Examples include: The Columbia Encyclopedia, Poems of Emily Dickinson, The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, and other great classic titles.
Internet Public Library Literary Criticism IPL's Literary Criticism site has thousands of "critical and biographical web sites about authors and their works that can be browsed by author, by title, or by nationality and literary period."
Oprah's Bookclub Oprah’s Bookclub is popular with many of our library patrons. Search this site for her recent selections, past selections, book club discussion and more.

Morningstar--Investment Information For years Morningstar has been one of the premier printed research guides to mutual funds. The online version does not have as much detail as the printed guide, but what you see here can be quite helpful.

The NAICS is replacing the SIC (the United States' "Standard Industrial Classification") as the way goods and industries are classified. The "NAICS Search" button allows you to look for an industry and determine it's number base and manufacturing category.
Thomas Register: Information on
Manufacturers
Thomas Register has been a standard reference source for many years in its print version. Since the Web site compares so favorably with the print version, some KSAL libraries use the only the online version.

World Chamber of Commerce Network

Use the search engine at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Link to find Chambers of Commerce throughout the world. Just click on "Chamber of Commerce Industry Index" and then "Search Chamber." Address, phone, fax, Web site and email of chambers are all available here.
Idaho Department of Commerce This site is designed to encourage anyone thinking of starting a business in Idaho. It provides general information on Idaho communities, business services, population, economy, and other material helpful to entrepreneurs and anyone else needing these statistics.
 Idaho Small Business Solutions The description at the top of the page is perfect: "Welcome to Idaho Small Business Solutions™. This site will help you find your way through the requirements of government agencies that regulate businesses in the state of Idaho."

Dave's PC Guides  Dave offers courses on computers through the University of Michigan. Some of the links on this site just describe his classes, but his "6 guides" listed to the left of the page (including, "How to buy a PC," "Setup and upgrade," and "Trouble Shooting") are very helpful.
PC World.com PC World has been a popular print resource for information on the latest in computer hardware and software for years. This is the electronic version of that magazine. Like most online versions of magazines, it is abridged. However, it is still worth checking for ratings of computers and computer related products.
The Internet Detective This site provides on online tutorial to help you learn how to navigate and evaluate the Internet. It contains very helpful explanations of web terminology and technology.
Hobbes' Internet Timeline If you wish to follow the development of this very new Industry, this page is a great place to start. Even if you are not doing research, tracking the Internet's exponential growth through Hobbes' charts and graphs is very interesting.
HTML Primer: How to Create Web Pages For anyone serious about creating a page to someone just curious to see how it's done, this Primer is a great resource. The learning is self paced in small bites, so you aren't overwhelmed with too much information at one time.

Bigfoot Phone Directory The Bigfoot Directory does not include the map and driving directions that are found in Anywho. However, it does allow you to search for an individual's email address.
Nationwide Yellow Page Search Find local businesses in the nationwide online yellow pages book.
Teldir Telephone Directories Teldir is an index to various Internet phone directories. It includes white and yellow pages, business 800 and toll numbers, fax numbers, email, and Government directories for the US In addition it links to some directory information for over 150 countries.

UI at a distance If you live in Idaho, want to get a degree, but can't get to the University, this is the site for you. Cyndi's List Well maintained categorized and cross-referenced index of thousands of genealogical internet resources. Included on this easy to use site are how-to articles, links to databases, genealogy societies and more.
Family History Center™ Simple to use site which searches several databases at once
US GenWeb Project Vital record indexes and information for US States. Different states have different laws about what is public information so these pages will vary a great deal from state to state.
Social Security Death Index (SSDI) Social Security Death Index database contains information provided by the Social Security Administration.
Origins of Family Names Free dictionary of Surname origins and last name meanings.
National Genealogy Society The National Genealogy Society is a service organization that leads and educates the national genealogy community. A valuable link:, "Consumer Protection," is located under "Programs" on the main page.
Records Project Continue with a public records search, view state records, or access recent articles and resources. For each record type listed, there are state record pages that provide access to state-specific record locations, resources and other information. Access county record information by selecting Public, a state, and then a county of interest.

Coeur d'Alene Home Page At last check some of the links on this page were inactive. What was working included Coeur d'Alene Web sites, Education and Government, Chamber of Commerce, Statistics, and a very helpful yellow pages.
Kootenai County Home Page You can find a great deal of information related to the governing of Kootenai County on this page. Data on jobs, elections, the county court, commissioners, and many other county related departments and functions may be found here.
Spokane Home Page A great site: a home page with current information from city hall, a calendar that lists events for the entire month with maps to their locations, a page with links to city services, a list of departments that show who is responsible for what around town, and more.

State of Idaho Home Page Everything from soup to nuts about Idaho Government is here. The page is especially helpful when the legislature is in session and you need to track legislation or follow floor debate. It also has a guide to Idaho statutes under its "legal" link that is useful year round.
I -Docs Contains an online collection of paper and digital resources from various Idaho state agences are located, made searchable, and are available in full-text.
State of Oregon Home Page This site contains information similar to what is available on the Idaho page. Oregon Jobs, legislature, government departments and officials are found here.
State of Washington Home Page Washington State's Home page, rivals Idaho's for its ease of use. Here you will find information on Washington public services, business, education, government, technology, employment, and a handy state agency and state subject index.
State of Montana Home Page  Montana’s site is similar to other regional state web sites.

National

County and City Databooks: 1988 & 1994 The County and City Databooks are reliable print sources used by many libraries. You may select, US Data on Counties, Cities and States as well as information on their rankings in a variety of areas. Here the 1988 and 1994 editions are available online.
US Census Bureau on the Web As the census bureau added new information from the 2000 census, it improved the user friendliness of its home page. Because of the mountains of information with which this agency deals, it can still be challenging to search for census data; but this site is much improved.
US Copyright Office If you would like to copyright a work, you may obtain the forms from this site as long as your computer has a recent version of Adobe Acrobat. The laws are here too if you need to research the legality of copyright issues.
US Code You may search the code by entering the code's citation (title and section), or you may search each title individually to find what you need. There is also a good keyword search engine if you cannot find a "title" that describes your topic well.
US House of Representatives Links to Operations, member offices, committee offices, leadership offices, voting records, and the upcoming legislative agenda of the House of Representatives are just some of the links available at this site.
US Senate The senate website offers similar services available at the house site: web pages of members, floor activity, voting records, etc.
US Judicial Branch Resources This site covers judicial matters quite well. It has links to the Constitution, US Code, State Statutes, Federal Register, Code of Federal Regulations, Federal Court, Supreme Court, State Courts and other judicial data.
Thomas Certain sites are on everyone's "most useful" list. This is one of them. Thomas is the place to look if you have any questions about action in the US House or Senate. Here you can find the Congressional record for the past ten years, congressional documents and debates from 1774-1783, and more.
The White House The White House Web site provides access to information about the Federal Government with an emphasis on the executive branch. Federal services, cabinet information, recent press releases, and history of the White House are all available here.
Findlaw FindLaw is an excellent resource for finding government sites all over the country. In addition, it links to very useful legal sites in various states and regions and is a great tool for finding legal forms.

Medline Medline is a well respected database of online resources put together by the National Library of Medicine. Here you may find articles in lay terms on a wide variety of health topics as well as information from professional journals.
American Medical Association A useful site with links to consumer health information, a vast AIDS information center and a searchable database of hundreds of thousands of physicians.
ParentsPlace.com ParentsPlace contains a great deal of sophisticated, user-friendly information on children's health issues.
Hardin Meta Directory of Internet Health Resources "We list the best sites that list the sites," says Hardin's home page. Based at the University of Iowa, the Hardin Directory is an index of sites that, in turn, contain links to other sites.
MS Crossroads MS Crossroads is an index to Web sites that list information on Multiple Sclerosis.
NOAH NOAH is the New York Online Access to Health. This site is an excellent resource for health information. Links and search tools are easy to understand, and information is concise.
American Academy of Family Physicians This site is valuable for anyone who wants information about family medicine, the AAFP, or the large variety of health issues that family physicians are trained to manage.
Kids Health Kids Health speaks about and to kids on health issues. There are three sections: One for kids, one for teens, and one for parents - - a great site.
Agency for Health Care Research and Quality Information from AHRQ's research is intended to help people make more informed decisions and improve the quality of health care services. AHRQ was formerly known as the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research.
Center for Disease Control (CDC) Here you will find information on disease, control, and prevention as well as health information for travelers.

 Natural Remedy Resources

The Alternative Health Homepage This page lists links to other Web sites on Alternative health. As it describes itself: "The Alternative Medicine Homepage is a jumpstation for sources of information on unconventional, unorthodox, unproven, or alternative, complementary, innovative, integrative therapies."
 The Natural Pharmacist This site describes its data as "science based natural health information you can trust." It certainly is easy to use and coverage of different herbs and ailments seems excellent.

DeArmond Consumer Health Library The DeArmond health library is free and provides access to extensive information on many health-related topics through books, journals, online services, audiotapes and videotapes.

History & Geography

The History Net The site is made up of numerous articles on a variety of historical subjects. Most of these concern US history. A fascinating site for history buffs.
As described on the site: "The Archive collects and publishes declassified documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The Archive receives no US government funding."
American and British History Resources on the Internet This site is a web index of history links. Its focus is "scholarly resources of American and British history."
National Geographic This is the web page for National Geographic Magazine. Preview the current issue, browse maps, review news stories related to Geographic subjects, etc.
CIA World Factbook For a number of years the CIA Factbook has been one of the best sources for culture, economy, political climate, and geography on countries. Whether planning a trip, writing a report, or just curious about a foreign government, check The Factbook.

Christian Classics Ethereal Library This site offers a large amount of information related to Christianity. Browse links from the World Wide Bible Study, Early Church Fathers and other books on Christian theology.
Philosophy Pages Philosophy pages is an excellent site to investigate basic information about Western Philosophy. The teachings of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, as well as information on earlier and later schools of thought are all present here.

Find it! Consumer Find it consumer is a site operated by the Washington State Library. Although it is concerned with issues affecting Washington consumers, a great deal of information on this site would be of interest to Idaho residents. For example, typing the word "Idaho" in the search engine brought up over 300 entries.
N.A.D.A. N.A.D.A. is the National Automotive Dealer Association’s price guide to Autos, Recreational Vehicles, boats, airplanes and more. It is one of the most used print sources in the library. Here find a free lemon check, rate quote, retail values and more.
 Kelly Blue Book The Kelly Blue Book is similar to the N.A.D.A. However its focus is a bit narrower—no airplanes or recreational vehicles. Get the trade-in value or suggested retail of your used vehicle and see the latest pricing on new vehicles.
Autotropolis Autotropolis.com gives you one of the nation's largest selections of previously-owned vehicles, with thousands of new used cars added daily.
FedWorld Fed World is a program of the U. S. Dept. of Commerce. You will find loads of Federal Government Information here.
MapQuest A great resource for finding directions—especially in metropolitan areas.
Occupational Outlook Handbook For years the US department of labor has published an excellent print source for those entering the work force or changing jobs called the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Now that resource is online. It is easy to use and just as informative as the print source. A great site!

The Michigan Electronic Library Mel is a directory to high quality non-commercial sites on the Internet. It has been called the first Internet Virtual Library.
Librarian's Index to the Internet L.I.I. Is a diverse directory of over forty subjects. Each site is evaluated and coverage is excellent.
Internet Public Library The Internet Public Library is a public library for the world wide web providing online reference services. Students from a consortium of colleges and universities with programs in information science develop and maintain the IPL!
Library of Congress If you want something that you can't find anywhere else, check here. In addition to materials that can be checked out, the library holds a vast store of "American Treasures," which it showcases in its exhibits. Click on "The Exhibitions: An Online Gallery" to learn about some these items.
Cyber Dewey Do you think like a librarian? Even if you don't, this well organized Internet directory (based on the library's Dewey Decimal System) might be very helpful.
Library Spot Besides online links to a wide variety of libraries, this site provides some interesting reference resources. Definitely worth a look.

How Stuff Works A great site for getting the inside information on technology we take for granted every day: How a car engine works, how a television works, how a CD works, etc.
Natural History Notebooks This site is placed on the Web by the Canadian Museum of nature. It provides descriptions and illustrations on 242 animal species. It is excellent for school reports or when you need a quick fact.
Wildflowers in Bloom Wildflowers in bloom is a list of wildflowers that connect to links where you can see the plant's image, scientific name, where it grows, etc.
NASA History Office  Text, pictures, movies, and audio clips of past US space exploration are available at this interesting site.
US Geological Survey Track Hurricanes, research seismic activity, find out about floods and more at this interesting government Web site.
Topozone.com Topozone's own description: "The TopoZone is the web's center for recreational and professional topographic map users. We've worked with the USGS to create the Web's first interactive topo map of the entire United States."
Encyclopedia of Psychology As the site states: "The Encyclopedia of Psychology is intended to facilitate browsing in any area of psychology." Information is available directly on this web site as well through an index of links to other sites. 
Periodic Table of Elements This is a GREAT site for anyone who needs information about the elements. The main page lists the Periodic Table of elements. Click on the letter for an element and find, its name, weight, atomic number, electronic configuration, description, discoverer, date of discovery, and much, much more.

Travel

These three travel sites are excellent sources for
vacation destinations, hotels, airfares, maps and more!
This site would usually be thought more appropriate for the "Government" category. It is placed in "Travel" because of its links to warnings for those traveling abroad.
