ATHOL, IDAHO
The Naming of a Village
The Northern Pacific Railway named Athol when it was established in 1881.
Ten years later the NP moved its depot -- and thus the village -- a few
miles to the present site.
NP officials dusted off their archives at St.
Paul to come up with the origin of the name.
They said it was named for
Athol, Mass., which in turn was named
for James Murray, second duke of
Atholl in Scotland.
